AFAIK, there's no true successor to Balsa. Spruce was intended
to start where Balsa left off, but it's not even as capable as Balsa
was, yet. It's becoming a basic, lightweight e-mail client that will
hopefully do all the basics someday.
Yes, GNOME really does need a good e-mail client that can be
integrated with GNOME's MIME-aware features, and can work with all the
e-mail delivery systems out there. Unfortunately, it looks like a few
months at least until we get there.
