width of empty space besides scrollbars

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but is it possible to change the default
width of the empty space between scrollbars and the scrolling area? It seems
this width does not change according to different themes. The original gtk
look was modeled after Motif 1.x but in Motif 2.0 the empty space besides
scrollbars have gone away (or greatly reduced), The empty space serves no
useful purpose (other than as a wide separator), looks ugly and wastes space.
It creates inconsistency between gtk applications, some of which eliminated
the empty space already (just compare Gnumeric and GMC). Maybe the gtk
maintainers can consider eliminating the empty space by default?
