no file selection filter in "Open" dialog box

Something which has constantly been bothering me in any gtk+ and GNOME
application is that the file open dialog box (via File | Open ) does
not offer any means to filter the file selection for a certain file
type (like *.tex or *.tar.gz or *.sgml or *-transculturation*.gz or
similiar). This is severely lacking in gnumeric, gimp, abiword and
whatever. Actually i even can't name any single gtk+/GNOME based
application which offers this facility.
That's the one thing about usability i like so much about Motif and
Win32 applications (since i can't check myself: does KDE have it?) and
which i definitely miss in GNOME applications.
