GDM and session selection

GDM used to work fine. Now, when I try to select an
alternate session from the menu, GDM pulls up the
clock/watch icon and freezes. This is before the "do you
want to change the default" message.

The only thing which has changed was mucking about with a
few .gnome files, but I've completely removed all the .gnome
files, to no avail.

Recompiling GDM from the latest CVS doesn't help.
