imlib compile error on FreeBSD

I am setting up FreeBSD 2.2.8 on my spare computer for fun and so I'll have
another platform to test gnome on :)

The first problem I've run into is compiling imlib 1.9.4.  The configure
script finds everything ok, but make immediately bombs out with this
message:

carmela[/home/ned/filez/src/imlib] % make
make all-recursive
Making all in gdk_imlib
"Makefile", line 289: Need an operator
make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
*** Error code 1

Stop.
*** Error code 1

Stop.

The version of gcc is 2.7.2.1.  Can anyone provide any clues?  Thanks,
