Name server won't start

I have a problem on a RedHat 5.1 system, starting the name service.
The machine is not running X, but exporting apps to other Unices (so no
wm, either).
programs like gnome-terminal work, but the panel, gmc, goad-browser die
wtih
the assertion name_server != CORBA_OBJECT_NIL
(goad.c, line 1115, goad_server_register).
This is with gnome-libs-1.0.4
Anyone seen this one before, or got a solution?
