RE: GDM User Pix

I've having the exact same problem... I started playing with GDM on
Friday, and so far have sunk about 5 hours into making the thing
work with faces. This sounds a lot like the origonal problem here.

Here's the situation. I've got the latest (the RPM that was on
the mirrors on Friday) release of GDM. I have everything installed
and I'm now running the 1.0.3 release of GNOME. I check everything
out in the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and get familiar with it. Then I start
it from a console logged in as root. It works, but no photos. So,
some rummaging through the docs show me about the little permission
issue. So, I verify all the sizes of the images (as to conform to
the file size limit in the gdm.conf) chown all of them to the
user they're in, I run of write access for everyone but user,
and I do the same for the ~/.gnome directory. Also, just as a
precaution, I changed all the images (~/.gnome/photo) from a JPEG
to a PNG, and shrink the file size in GIMP as best I can.
Then (good trick) I change virtual consoles so that
I get my root console back, and then HUP (kill -HUP xxx) the
PID of the gdmgreeter. This re-reads the config file, and
restarts GDM. I get the login screen, and STILL no faces.
To shorten a bit, I checked and rechecked everything...
tried putting all the pictures in the /usr/lib/faces/ directory
and re-verified the gdm.conf.... on and on and on.
Nothing worked..... but here's the interesting part.
If I log in to X and start gdmgreeter I see all the pics like I should,
but if I start gdm from rc.local, then everything is busted, and
I don't get an image. This is VERY odd. I can change the logo image
with no problems, I can change the default image for no face, with
no problems, but I can't get the GDMGreeter to give me faces unless
I log into X and start it... which is of no use.

This is a small issue, but a REALLY kool feature, especial
for kids (<12) who are starting to use Linux and have problems typing.
Help, help help!!! Thanx all!
