Using egcs or pgcc? It's probably the C++ that's broken. Luckily
gcc-2.7.2 is equally broken so you can use that to compile jade.

Could anyone who got this stuff working please explain what should
go where, what environment variables need to be set to what, and
where the scripts and other stuff in gnome-docu need to be placed?

rpms are nice for many, but Gnome needs to be compilable. Until this
mess I was always able to get Gnome to compile without help.
(Yes I can still get it to compile by ignoring these errors, but
I'd now finally like to get these docs processed.)
