What does you .xinitrc (etc) look like? You need to start
E before you start GNOME (my opinion anyway). Once E is
running then you kick in all the GNOME goodies. So, as
a test, you may want to get rid of .Xclient and .xsession
and edit a fresh .xinitrc reading simply:
exec enlightenment
See what happens. (well, just edit the one you've got keeping
a back up.) You also may want to copy your .xinitrc into
a message and post it to us so we can see.
What version of E and GNOME are you using?
