Yes, the packages should definitely do this, since writing a setup
script portable over the whole lot of distribution idiosyncrasies
would be hard. But a rpm is only for RedHat, and RedHat should have
the relevant files always in the same place.

If your package did not integrate Gnome into your environment, the bug 
lies there.
