Gnome 1.0 problems

I just installed Gnome 1.0 on a fresh RH 5.2 (updated) distribution.  I
had some problems with gtk and glib but got that all sorted.  Now
everytime I start X I get a core in my home directory and an error that
says:

GDK: x io error

when exiting...

not sure the exact message that is from memory. Another problem is that
CTRL_ALT_+ no longer changes my resolution? I'm not sure why Gnome would
have affected this? Any ideas would be appreciated.
