esound server and port 35091

hi, i just recently joined the list, and i can't find anything else that
applies...  i just downloaded all the gnome rpms and (i think) i followed
the instructions properly, but when i startx to try gnome out, i just get a
plain-old X session.  when i quit out of X, i see an error that reads:

Unable to connect to server port 35091
This generally means that the program could not talk to the esound server

i don't have a sound card...  do i need one?

any suggestions, or a push to some documentation would be appreciated...
