cvs compilation woes, please help

ok, i've been all day trying to get this cvs stuff to compile on two
different machines.

i've started from a clean 5.2 system with no gtk or gnome and have
successfully installed (--prefix=/opt/gnome) ORBit, audiofile, esound,
glib, gtk+, gnome-libs, libgtop, and imlib.

however, gnome-core, gnome-pim, and an assortment of other packages
die like this:

    abulafia:~/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim$ make
    make all-recursive
    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/aldy/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim'
    Making all in po
    make[2]: Entering directory `/home/aldy/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim/po'
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `all'. Stop.
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/aldy/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim/po'
    make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/aldy/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim'
    make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2
    abulafia:~/gnome/cvs/gnome-pim$

gnome-core also craps out here in po/. apparently automake or some
other friend fails to make a Makefile in /po and my automake &
autoconf knowledge is severely limited as the last 12 hours have
proven.

sorry if this is an obvious question but i've been working on this all
day. i've installed clean/recent copies of automake, autoconf,
libtool, and a myraid of other things.-- on two different machines and
i just don't have the CPU or brain power to do this one more time.

i'd appreciate any help.

thanks.

Aldy
