It turns out that the problem is a bug in Solaris' vsnprintf
function (and thus g_vsnprintf). If you comment out HAVE_VSNPRINTF in
glib's config.h and rebuild glib the problem goes away.
I have built all of GNOME that I want now. Works pretty well.
