I know there's a bit of a bias against Java in lots of ways,
but the Stylepad example program which is shipped with
the SwingSet sounds to be pretty much what is wanted
here. It's even possible to dump the model to stdout.

Given a bit of tweaking, like a text model -> XML or
HTML filter (and perhaps porting it to C:) and we
should have a good simple text editor - choice of 3
colours, a few sizes, italic or bold, etc.

No idea what the license for it is though. Should probably
have checked that :|
