Two options here.

Easiest: Try running "esddsp x11amp"
This tries to force a non-esd-aware app to use esd. (Doesn't allways work
however).

Best: Upgrade. Download xmms (the new name for x11amp) version 0.9 final.
I don't know about x11amp, but from xmms onwards, it has an
esd-output-plugin, which works very well. (Also many more new features).
