I generated succesfully gnome-core 0.99.2 with egcs 1.1.1 on the
following platforms: 

sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1
sparc-sun-solaris2.6
i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1
i686-pc-linux-gnu
alpha-dec-osf4.0b
hppa1.1-hp-hpux10.20
powerpc-ibm-aix4.3.2.0
mips-sgi-irix6.5

After having solved the problem with po/POTFILES.in, i.e. deleting all
non-existing files referred inside  po/POTFILES.in, the gneration went
OK for all platforms except some libtool (link) problems:

- mips-sgi-irix6.5, some times the order is important (esd-manager for
  instance), the -export-dynamic flag does not work on IRIX (panel)

- powerpc-ibm-aix4.3.2.0, the -Wl,-bbigtoc is often needed

- alpha-dec-osf4.0b, applets/modemlights cannot be compiled, the
  generation was done with "make modemlights="
