mc-4.5.22 configure problem

trying to compile mc-4.5.22, running configure I get:

./configure: syntax error near unexpected token `GNOME_GNORBA_HOOK(,)'
./configure: ./configure: line 9219: `          GNOME_GNORBA_HOOK(,)'

just after checking for Gpm_Repeat in -lgpm

No old gnome libs or .m4 files laying around (just cleaned ALL
glib/gtk/gdk/imlib/gnomelibs and all .m4's corresponding to them from
system).  gtk-1.2.0, glib-1.2.0, gnome-libs and ORBit checked out from
cvs at about noon friday.  Any ideas? or need more info?
