[GMC] layout menu doesn't refresh buttons

Description of problem:

Changing the layout from the menu does not refresh which icon in the button
bar is depressed.  For example, click on the Icon button the change to the
Icon view.  Then go to the layout menu, and choose Detailed, for example.
The layout changes, but the Icon button is still depressed.

The reverse is also true. Click another button on the toolbar to change the
view, and the layout menu will still have Detailed selected.
