[BUG] tracked down: panel takes ages to start

Hi,

I have worked out why my panel takes several seconds at 90%+ CPU to
launch.

There is some big inefficiency somewhere parsing .xpm files. My panel
background is a 180k .xpm file.

When launching ee on the same file it also takes ages to start up!!

"xv" has no problem loading this file virtually instantly.

PS. Did I see another post about xpm's loading slowly? My meory can't
decide if I did or I am making it up :)
