mc: autoconf bug?

For several weeks I have been trying to compile gnome-mc. I always
get an error similar to this:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/gnomain/mc/src'
gcc -c -I.. -I./.. -I./../vfs -I.. -DBINDIR=\""/opt/gnome/bin/"\"
-DLIBDIR=\""/opt/gnome/lib/mc/"\"
-DICONDIR=\""/opt/gnome/share/pixmaps/mc/"\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\""/opt/gnome/share/locale/"\" -DREGEX_MALLOC
-DHAVE_CONFIG_H -g -I/opt/gnome/lib/glib/include -I/opt/gnome/include
subshell.c
subshell.c:66: stropts.h: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [subshell.o] Error 1

I have a fairly standard Red Hat 5.2 setup, and I'm pretty confused as
to why I don't have this file.

glibc-devel-2.0.7-29
glibc-2.0.108-0.981221
kernel-2.2.1
