ok, so based on what you are saying, and what 'seems' to be the problem (as
i'm sure i didn't fully understand your correct explanation :), a co will grab
files that have been added in a way that update cannot understand. 

i'm way out of my depth here :) but is it somehow possible to carry on using
update (and saving bandwidth), yet keep the codebase the same as if you did a
co everytime?
