@MAINTAINER_MODE_TRUE@ required by Makefile.in???

I'm having a real hard time compileing all of the latest CVS code. I have the latest versions of Autoconf and Automake, as well as the latest Libtool. After running ./autogen.sh and typing make, I get the following error:

make: *** No rule to make target '@MAINTAINER_MODE_TRUE', needed by 'Makefile.in'. Stop.

I have to use gEdit to search and replace every occurence of @MAINTAINER_MODE_TRUE@ with # (a comment symbole). After I do that, I can compile, but the time spent having to do that with EVERY gnome and enlightenment package is a pain. Does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it or prevent it? Thanx a million for any help.
