GNOME and perl can't coexist?

Forgive me if this is a FAQ:
I am writing a gnome app that links with perl (since it offers a perl
interpreter). However, I am getting this irritating warning:
/opt/gnome/include/libgnome/gnome-i18n.h:30: warning: `_' redefined
/usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.00404/CORE/config.h:1358: warning: this is the location of the previous definition
Can Gnome and perl coexist? How do I get around this?
