Meta keys in gnome-terminal wrong on Sun keyboard

If you startup a gnome-terminal on a Sun display the Meta key in bash is setup
to be Alt.  This is wrong.  Sun keyboards have special keys on either side of
the space bar which are meant to be used as Meta keys.  These return KeySym
Meta_L and Meta_R.  
Is there anyway to fix this?
