I couldn't get it to work with a specified font dir either. :-(

I got it to work by extracting the URW fonts to one of the directories
listed in the Makefile, such as:
	/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1

Then a `make install` of gnome-print seemed to work, and Gnumeric
now starts. :-)
