need help starting gnome

hi,

I've usually started gnome using the RedHat provided "xinitrc" file, and
that works fine.  But I can't start gnome using my own ".xinitrc" file
in the user home dir.  The gnomefaq, says "exec gnome-session" is all I
need
in my .xinitrc.  But that gives me 

Authentication failed
xinit:  Server error.

Earlier on I was getting errno=111

my .xinitrc comprises of only "exec gnome-session", and the user has
never used gnome (ie. has no gnome config files/dirs in $HOME).

I have gnome-libs 1.0.12, RedHat 6.0, gnome-core 1.0.9
