Modem Lights

Hello folks,
I've been trying to get the 'modem lights' panel applet to work without
success. I can get it to dial and connect using ppp0, but it never
recognizes the connection - always says 'not connected' - and doesn't
show any modem activity.
Running RH 6.0 with latest gnome rpms from them. Any ideas?
