I may not be doing it right, but I use "Ctrl+Alt+Backspace" to exit X/GNOME as
often as not.  How to "click your way out" depends on the window manager you're
using.

As to shutting down, etc., your Linux box:

shutdown -r now = go down for a restart now
shutdown -h now = go down for a system halt (preparatory to powering off) now

Typing "man shutdown" (without the quotes) should give you more information on
how you can do this as well.
