One improvement I would love to see is to make
gnome more integrated with sound.
For example, I have a Compaq computer, with the
volume buttons on the keyboard... all volume control is software
controlled. Windoze starts up the sound mixer when it boots, and the
volume buttons control that. If gnome started its own built-in sound
mixer, and then could be set up so certain keyboard controls operated it
(besides opening up another mixer program and doing it the old fashioned way)
life would be a lot easier for me and all the idiots who bought Compaqs.
Right now, if I forget to open a mixer before using any sound, sound plays at
the default level which makes me go deaf for 5 minutes.
I don't know if X11 would have to be modified for
this to work, however. When I run xev, pressing the colume controls (or
the CD controls, or internet access controls) doesn't register an event.
Perhaps X11 itself should have an integrated mixer, but that's off
topic.
I'm not good at getting involved, but if any of you
could give me some pointers on how to do either of the above, let me know.
I'll at least make an attempt.
