Knuth produced some icons for TeX (and related programs) some years ago.
I don't particularly like them,
but I have put PNG versions in 
http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~tim/TeX/Knuth-icons-png.tar.gz .
These are 32x32 PNGs,
converted from the icons in ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/pub/tex/support/icons/ .
I haven't tried using them with GNOME yet.
