Ok, so here is a little proposal:
Add to the right click menu of applets a 'panel' submenu which is the
traditional right click menu for the panel.
Add a property to not have a border around the panel (like the between
applets border). Or at least configure this size.
I think this provides a pretty good resolution to the problem, and makes
the panel even a bit better.
I will try to get this into the branches over the weekend if people are
not opposed to it.
