The problem with your post is that it was too obvious that it's highly
desired feature to me, so I didn't want to end up with huge quote of

Anyway, according to the Fitt's law which you have previously quoted,
the feature I requested in wishlist bug #1282 -
http://bugs.gnome.org/db/12/1282.html gets a nice theory backing. :)
The reason is: usually the empty desktop area is big, er *huge* target,
and distance is small or even *none*. :)
It's the Directory Opus 5.x which gave me the idea. For those
interested, DO5 is very highly customizable desktop replacement for
Amiga, proprietary unfortunately. Maybe screenshots at
http://www.gpsoft.com.au/magellan/MagII-NewFeatures1.html could give
some food for gmc developers' minds.
