If you start this applet in the command-line of a terminal you'll see
that it searches for /etc/ppp/ppp-on and ppp-off.
When you can connect to your provider from the command-line by
starting the ppp-on-script and the applet does nothing, you may
have permission-problems to the scripts. They must be accessable by
the users-group.
