I have had the same problem exactly using the rpm's I got with RH6,
and then installing, e.g., gweather. 

It would be nice if we could get error messages, either in dialog
boxes or on a console/log window, when things are started from the
panel and have errors - at the moment they seem to just get piped to
.xsession-errors in a long list from which it is unclear what error
refers to what user action. Maybe errors from gnome apps could be
logged with something kind of like syslogd, and then have a gui
error-log viewer, letting the end-user see errors sorted by
app/applet/process/date etc.
