seriously though, I've heard of a lot of growing discontent from various
places, does anyone think that they may be interested in taking on a project
and unifying some of this discontent?

I guess you mean the rubberband selection thingy. It's not a bug, it's a
feature ;)
As far as I know: GMC has to grab the x-server to be able to do that, which
means that the screen freezes.
