That's a different problem altogether, that's an unhappy esd binary. 
First, make sure that your sound drivers work without esd.  Then make sure
that esd isn't giving any configuration or compilation warnings when you
build it.  If both of those check out fine, than there's probably a bug in
esd, report it to the bug tracking system.  Check out
http://bugs.gnome.org/Reporting.html for instructions.  Make sure to
include full system information including what processor, operating
system, kernel version, sound card, sound drivers, etc. you are using.
