gnome-libs configure problems

I'm trying to install gnome  It seems impressive, and I'd like to start
to contribute in some ways to the
project.

I installed all needed packages before trying to compile gnome-libs-
0.30.1
When I try to configure it, it seems to be unable to find GTK-1.1.1,
wich
is effectively installed.  All the others configure scripts find the right
version of GTK, but gnome-libs gives that:

checking for GTK - version >= 1.1.1... no

How can I change GTK to point on libgtk-1.1 ? Can I just delete the
old one? (1.0.4).

Any help would be very appreciated!!!
