new to gnome and have some package questions

I just think I've installed gnome right.  But, I seem to have a question
about the packages.  The web page I was following was dated for the older
version.  So not all the packages that are on the ftp server match to the
names of waht is on the web page.  Are the ones in the ftp dirs all i
need.  See I don't have panel.  I thought it would have been with
gnome-core or something.  Have i missed something?
