I don't have a clue. When I deleted my gnome-core CVS tree and
refetched, though, they disappeared, so that problem is gone.

However, I still have

aclocal: configure.in: 170: macro `AM_PATH_ESD' not found in library
panel/Makefile.am:157: variable `GNOME_LIBDIR' not defined
panel/Makefile.am:157: variable `GNOMEUI_LIBS' not defined
panel/Makefile.am:157: variable `INTLLIBS' not defined
applets/Makefile.am:204: HAVE_LIBESD does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
applets/Makefile.am:210: HAVE_LIBGTOP does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
applets/asclock/Makefile.am:300: variable `GNOME_LIBDIR' not defined
applets/asclock/Makefile.am:300: variable `GNOMEUI_LIBS' not defined
applets/asclock/Makefile.am:300: variable `INTLLIBS' not defined
applets/gen_util/Makefile.am:333: variable `GNOME_LIBDIR' not defined
applets/gen_util/Makefile.am:333: variable `GNOMEUI_LIBS' not defined
applets/gen_util/Makefile.am:333: variable `INTLLIBS' not defined
applets/batmon/Makefile.am:369: variable `GNOME_LIBDIR' not defined
applets/batmon/Makefile.am:369: variable `GNOMEUI_LIBS' not defined
applets/batmon/Makefile.am:369: variable `INTLLIBS' not defined

etc ... you get the idea.

So, it would appear, the subdirectory configures are not finding the
macro definitions of gnome.m4. Why? Ay, there's the rub.
