That's a known problem. The panel thinks it's on display :0 all
programs started from the window manager think they are on display
:0.0

The workaround:
Look into the files ~/.gnome/CORBA-servers and
~/.gnome_private/panel. There you'll find strings, with
`DISPLAY-:0='. cut'n'paste them and then change the :0= to :0.0=. Be
careful the string in ~/.gnome/CORBA-servers is rather long. 

The fix:
convert the panel and applets to usr gnorba.
