What I found on my RH50 system at home --- *after* moving /usr/lib/libpopt.a 
out of the way; that was the first thing I thought of --- was that popt is in 
gnome-libs, it appears to build, but somehow the copy of libgnomesupport.* 
that got installed (with the correct modification times) doesn't contain it.  
I'm somewhat lost at this point.

(It's definitely not linking against the wrong popt, because ldd shows that 
*none* of the popt symbols are resolved.  And shows that libgnomesupport.so is 
resolved to the correct copy.)
