Actually I fixed it just now. I had been using a 5 day old or so cvs
snapshot tarball. Having just installed cvs, I checked out the entire cvs
tree to my local machine and tried from there. Now everything works
(except exceptions in shared libs -- this doesn't seem like a big deal
though)
