Hardly a memory hog at all. The masks are only 1 bit/pixel - meaning
that the entire screen at 1280x1024 fits in 160kb.
Now if you only cover, say, 10% of the screen in shaped masks (which
is very reasonable assumptions, as masks are only the icons and window
borders), you end up with 16 kb. This is negligible on today's
computers.
