Think about having text flowing around a graphic image embedded in a
document.  Neither the image nor the text may have a purely rectangular
form.  Or think about embedding text within some non-rectangular image
shape--like the profile of a face.  The text would be handled by one
component, the image by another.  You may have no use for such
capabilities--and neither do I--but the desktop publishing world needs
and wants them.
