Dealing with colors in GTK

Hi all:

I'm learning widget programming for GTK, but haven't been able to cope with 
GDK's color management (colors, color maps, color contexts and such).  Are 
there any suitable examples or documentation arround that I could look at to 
understand color management a bit better?
