newbie question

How hard is it to box together a developers release of
gnome?  As a gnome newbie it would be nice for me and 
probably others to be able to just grab a "complete" developers
release.  that way the new people like me could just untar and
./configure and be off.

currently with my freebsd 2.2.2 box it is just too much work trying to
figure out everything i need to write apps for gnome.
