gnome-libs, unrecognized option

I have been trying to compile gnome from CVS, but I cant
even get past configuring.

First I had to copy ltmain.sh, ltconfig and config.sub from
the libtool directory (that solved the problem of them being
missing away).

Secondly aclocal -I macros; automake; autoconf doesnt generate
config.h.in (I came to the conclusion it is supposed to do that
anyway). When I try autogen.sh instead config.h.in is generated
but then it chokes on this...

ltconfig: unrecognized option `--with-gnu-ld'
Try `ltconfig --help' for more information.
configure: error: libtool configure failed

Ok, so I tried to add 'support' for that options so added a
--with-gnu-ld) dummy=yes ;;
line to ltconfig. Some how it gets changed back and this happens
even if I change the permissions AND the owner of the file (!?).

before:
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 21488 May 10 01:40 ltconfig
after:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 mill adm 21488 May 10 01:44 ltconfig

Anyway, shouldnt all necessary files be present and what should I
do with ltconfig?

I have libtool 1.2 from gnu.org and automake 1.3.
