Unfortunately, 1.2 is quite old.  You need a newer version (I don't
know the oldest version that will still work with Gnome.  1.2f should
be ok, though).  The latest version is 1.2h:

	ftp://ftp.cygnus.com/pub/tromey/automake-1.2h.tar.gz

I hope to do an official 1.3 release sometime soon.  Perhaps next
week.
