I had the same problem while messing around with Playstation-memorycards.
It's simple: You can't avoid people messing with the highscores.
You can encrypt highscores and use CRCs, but even if no sourcecode is
available poeple will try to hack the file-format, just to see their name
in a "global" highscore.

P.S.: Idea: Gnome highscore server, a server that collects highscores from
all over the planet...
